Baja 404 racer surfaces

US resident and closet Peugeot spotter Tom Farris was checking through his local craigslist (us based version on ebay but on a local level - ed) when he came across this this interesting relic from the past.

Tom wrote, "I'm in San Diego, California and literally just happened to be cruising through Craigslist here and found this car listed for sale. I don't know anything about it beyond what I read in the ad. Peugeots aren't sold here any longer in the U.S. but I remember seeing some very nice Peugeot road rockets when I visited England in the mid 90's. I have no idea whether anyone there might be interested, but I thought I would just pass this on and you can direct it where ever you deem best, even if that is the round file."

The car is on craigslist with the following description, "This race car was raced in the late 1960's in the Baja 500 & Baja 1000 when it was a real rugged race….. Also raced into the early 1970's. The Peugeot 404 sedan was one of the favorites used in the African Rally's in the middle 1960's. This car has been sitting since 1974 and is in need of a lot of work to race again but it could easily be fixed up as a display car to use at vintage shows. It needs an engine as well as a few other parts and pieces. It has tires on it now that hold air and can be pushed around to work on it. It comes with a few original race photos from the 1972, 1973 Baja 500 and Baja 1000… I'll tell you all the history about it as well…. It looks pretty rough in the photo but it's a very cool vintage Baja Racecar… I drug it out of the back of the shop and saved it from the torch and scrap bin… I have NEW original taillight lens and front marker lens for it, other parts are available on the internet and local parts stores when putting this racecar back to original race condition… It wouldn't take alot to have it as a driver, then the body and paint could be restored if desired, I think it's best left like it is. Reasonable Offers will be considered!!!!! These vintage ralley cars are becoming very popular collector cars!!! E-mail with questions…", and is offered for around $1600 or about £800.

Several photos exist of the car in it's heyday, but current pictures suggest that any new owner would be faced with a labour of love to return the car to its former glory.

However, the car has an interesting history and is chock full of character. If anyone is looking for a 404 restoration this one may be the one to do.
