Model History
The Peugeot 104 is a supermini class car built by Peugeot between 1972 and 1988. The car was available initially as a 4 door saloon then as a 5 door hatchback and subsequently a series of 3 door coupe models. Engines fitted to the 104 ranged from 954cc to 1360cc, all based around the alloy block and head XY series of engines. The 104 platform provided the base for several different cars within the PSA group with the Talbot Samba, Citroen LN and LNA and Visa all being based on the 104 body and mechanicals. The engine was also shared with the Renault 14.
The 104 range was popular in France from it's introduction, offering high build quality, comfort and good economy, but was less successful in the UK where it gained a reputation for unreliability and rust.
Various model descriptions were used to indicate cars within the 104 range in adition to the usual GL and S models. The range of 3 door coupes were referred to as Z models, with the base ZL being the economy model while the larger engined ZS provided the sporty end of the range.
The various model/engine combinations for the 104 were as follows:
104 saloon. 4 door saloon 954cc 4cyl engine 50hp
104 GL 5 door hatchback 954cc engine 50hp
