Alan Paramore, organiser of our memorable trip to RAF Benson, Millbrook Proving Ground and the Shuttleworth Collection back in 2011, has again put together a great adventure for CPUK members and their guests. Starting Options: Saturday 15th June: Evening meal with other CPUK members and guests at the Castle Inn in the beautiful coastal village of West Lulworth. and/or Sunday 16th June: Early morning rendez-vous at Allenby Barracks near Bovington, Dorset BH20 6JA or join later in the day at either: Bovington Tank Museum BH20 6JG or Haynes Motor Museum, Sparkford near Yeovil, Somerset BA22 7LH As you can see, there are various possibilities for starting times but we very much hope that you'll be able to join us for the entire programme. For those of you who are able to make it a weekend trip, there'll be an evening meal on the Saturday at a pub in the beautiful coastal village of Lulworth. Lulworth is, of course, famed for appearing in every geography textbook ever written but the local hostelry is doing all that it can to make the village equally famed for food! Alan has also put together a list of accommodation for those interested in staying in the locality (please see below). Then, bright and early on Sunday morning, the main event really begins! Rendez-vous at 0830 hours at the Allenby Barracks for a private 'behind the scenes' guided tour of the Protected Mobility vehicles that are just back from active service in Afghanistan. This venue is not open to the public but CPUK members will be able to get close up and personal with, and perhaps even into, a wide variety of the latest generation of armoured vehicles which are used in modern combat, including Challenger 2 tanks and the RODET roll over trainers. After this special tour, we'll proceed to the nearby Bovington Tank Museum where we can learn more about the history and many developments of these types of vehicles. Alan has persuaded the museum to open especially for us, meaning that we benefit from a private viewing. He's also negotiated a very healthy discount on normal admission prices - only £6 a head, half that of the regular price. Even better is the inclusive, free guided tour which will explain the exhibits to us. Then it's back to our cars to start a road trip across the delightful Salisbury Plain, hopefully with its wonderful scenery on display in fantastic sunshine (well, we can hope, can't we!). A treasure hunt will keep you on the right roads while there'll be time to enjoy a picnic lunch (bring your own) before arriving at our final destination. Haynes Motor Museum is, in my opinion, one of the best in the country and we'll have time to explore the museum which is benefitting from the very recent completion of major building works. It was started by the Haynes Publishing family; I wonder how many Haynes manuals CPUK members collectively own! The museum is conveniently situated a stone's throw from the A303, providing excellent road links for homeward journeys. Thank you very much to Alan and his helpers for their time and efforts in preparing this programme. You'll probably never have the opportunity to inspect some of these machines again so come along! Please let Alison know where you intend to join the event. Following a briefing the night before at the Castle Inn, West Lulworth, eleven CPUK crews assembled at Bovington Tank Museum to take a guided tour of Allenby Barracks with Alan Paramore and Cpl Keith Harvey. This gave an insight into the day to day life in the Armed forces and got members “up close and personal” with the very latest machinery used by our troops across the world. Then it was back to the cars to take on the 49.2 mile route to the Haynes Motor Museum. Devised by Steve Partridge the route was presented as a road book, tulips and all! Lunch was taken at a scenic picnic area at half distance. There was plenty of help and assistance on hand to the crews if there were any navigation problems! Once at The Haynes Museum, CPUK members parked under the CPUK flag, held down by a new 208 GTI kindly loaned to us by Craig Morrow of Peugeot PR department who along with NP Aerospace also donated gifts for the event.A gentle visit to the museum and it`s exhibits followed. The event finished after a “full on” day at 5.30 when participants left to make their way home tired but elated after attending another brilliant CPUK event!
