The Canal to Canal run starts at Barton Marina, just off the A38 south of Burton upon Trent, at 10.30 am. We will go through country lanes to Hanbury, where an underground ammunition store blew up in 1944 leaving a huge crater which is now fenced off and abandoned. It is thought that about 70 people lost their lives in the explosion and the crater (which we can walk up to) still contains many unexploded bombs. The incident was `hushed up` so as not to damage wartime morale and little was known about it until fairly recently when papers were released under the '50 year rule'. The run then continues, with plenty of pubs en-route, to Huddlesford on the Junction of the Coventry Canal where we can join the “Huddlesford Heritage Gathering” , an event for historic boats and classic cars, including an all-day BBQ and many other activities…music ,dance, stalls etc.
