Member John Till writes; A bright but chilly Sunday morning saw around 30 CPUK members in the lovely Leicestershire town of Market Bosworth. Many members took the opportunity of visiting the delightful market selling local produce or, to keep warm, enjoying one of the many cafes or shops. As members started to gravitate back towards the Old Black Horse Inn which was the booked venue a certain amount of drama unfolded! Firstly a lady ran out of the Inn in a dressing gown and towel followed immediately by the police pulling up outside. At first it seemed as if there may be some kind of “domestic” dispute going on until it became clear that the Inn was actually on fire! All staff and guests of the Inn were evacuated with 2 fire engines attending. As the CPUK group stood outside it looked increasingly likely that the Opening Lunch was not going to be eaten, and our worst fears were confirmed when the landlord came over and solemnly declared that although the fire had caused minimal damage and was out, the Inn would not be opened for the rest of the day. Never one to be beaten, one of your members – John Till – was soon on his iPhone making various calls and was quickly (and fortunately) able to secure an alternative venue – “The Gate” just down the road at Osbaston and a convoy of Peugeots were soon making the trip down the road with stomachs loudly rumbling! One arrival at “The Gate” – the staff were simply amazing – they had managed to secure a private area for our group (31 sat down to lunch), despite it being a very busy Sunday lunchtime. Nothing was too much trouble for them and the food was tasty and great value for money. The rest of the afternoon saw plenty of good food, drinks and great conversation at what in the end turned out to be a very successful Opening Event. Our thanks go to the Manageress and staff at “The Gate” for pulling out all the stops for our group – and I’d recommend it to anyone who is in the area.
